Mark G. Nietzel

Mark G. Nietzel, 62, of Mentor, OH, passed away suddenly on Friday, March 6, 2026. He was born on June 12, 1963, in Willoughby, OH, to Dorothea Nietzel and the late Gunther Nietzel. Mark was the loving husband of 35 years to Kristine Nietzel, devoted father to Robert Nietzel (Makenzie), and proud grandfather to Teddy. He was the beloved brother of Daniel Nietzel (Audrey), cherished grandson of the late Mary and Ludwig Onigkeit, loving brother‑in‑law to Sandy Escandon (Dan) and Shirley Veness (Mered), and the cherished son‑in‑law of Toby Petersheim and the late Katie Petersheim. Mark held dear his niece Ana and nephews Eddie (Noel), Dominic, Mario, and Gino (Jazmynn). He was also preceded in death by his brother‑in‑law Ed Colavecchio. Forever a child at heart, Mark found joy in simple adventures and in everyday moments that became lifelong memories. Among the treasured times were many family vacations to Hilton Head, venturesome neighborhood explorations with his young son and nephews using walkie‑talkies, and the well‑earned reputation he held as the best grill master around. Known for his playful, fun‑loving sense of humor, he had a special gift for finding the lighter side of life and bringing smiles to everyone around him. Mark dedicated 40 years of his time, talent, and heart to Manhattan Deli, a local spot he loved dearly, where he served as general manager. To him, the coworkers and regulars he greeted each day were far more than part of the job—they became his second family. He cared deeply for them, and the friendships he built there were among the most meaningful parts of his life. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his family, extended family, and many dear friends. While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in the laughter he shared, the kindness he showed, and the love he gave so freely. We trust that he is now at peace in God’s care, and his memory will remain close to the hearts of all who knew and loved him. A private celebration of Mark’s life will take place at a later date.
