Obituary

Clarence "Ed" Crofoot, age 86, of Ashtabula, passed away on Friday June 13th, 2025 after a long journey with Parkinson's Disease, at his family home in Saybrook, OH. Ed was born on August 26th, 1939 in Rochester, NY, to parents Anne (Mikkonen) and Arnold B. Crofoot. In 1959, Ed graduated from Harbor High School and shortly after, in 1960 in North Carolina, Ed married Kathleen M. Laffey and they later divorced. In 1970, Ed married Dorothy Knam in Jefferson, OH. Ed was employed with East Ohio Gas Co. and Conrail; he also did landscape work in his spare time for many people. He was a member of G-555, the Service Employees International Union. He was a huge fan of the Cleveland Indians, Browns and Cavs, and loved watching games with his daughter Christine and grandson Louis. He also loved gardening and his craft with landscaping was meticulous and many people sought after his help in their yards. Ed was a proud member of Bethany Lutheran Church and attended services often with his daughters Patty and Christine and enjoyed being a part of services during the holidays and many events at the church. Ed is survived by his children, Christine Harting of Ashtabula, Patricia Crofoot of Ashtabula, and Ed Crofoot of Vail, CO. He is survived by his step-children, Karen Starcheroof of Jefferson, Tim (Tricia) Knam of Jefferson, Sandy Knam of Jefferson, and Joanne Osborne of Kingsville. Ed also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Louis Murphy of Ashtabula, Jamie Murphy of Los Angelos, CA, Seth and Sean Sperber of Turtle Creek, PA, and great-grandson Chandler Sperber of Turtle Creek, PA. Ed is survived by his beloved 12 step grandchildren and 25 step great-grandchildren from his late wife Dorothy Knam. Ed also leaves behind his sister Laura (Pat) Bagliore, his sister-in -law Linda Crofoot, and many loved nieces and nephews. Ed is preceded in death by his loving parents Ann (Mickenon) and Arnold Bates Crofoot, and his step-daughter Gail Knam formerly of Jefferson. Ed is also preceded in death by his siblings Carol Crofoot-Burns, Vince Crofoot and by his nephews, Andrew Crofoot and Vince Donathan. The family is inviting anyone who would like to come for fellowship to Calling Hours for Ed on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, from 5pm-7pm at Lake Erie Cremation & Funeral Services, 1500 Harpersfield Rd., Geneva, Ohio, 44041. A private Graveside Burial will take place at a future date with Ed's immediate family. The Crofoot family would like to thank Dr. Choi's office for the many years of excellent care, as well as the Hospice of the Western Reserve for all of their care and compassion they showed to Ed. Especially Ladina, Brook, and Amber. The family would also like to thank Son-in-law, Louy Murphy of whom allowed Ed to reside with him for 10 years and kept a watchful eye, and also a special thanks to Chistopher Brant who Ed considered a close family friend and helped him out greatly and cared for him. The family would also like to mention the Ninevah Beach Drive friends and neighbors who were so great, Peggy Allen, Judy, Margo, and Richard, as well as Jan & Jeff Agnew.
