Obituary

Matthew Campbell, 47, of Ashtabula, Ohio (previously of San Bernardino, California), passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

He was born on September 6, 1978, in Ashtabula, Ohio, to Arlene and Allen Campbell.

Matt had a vibrant spirit and a love for life that touched everyone around him. He participated in the Special Olympics from the age of 8 through 35, earning over 100 medals across a variety of sports—an accomplishment that reflected both his determination and enthusiasm. He worked at Ashcraft Workshop, where he formed meaningful friendships and took pride in his work. He especially enjoyed bowling with the Ashcraft team.

Matt had many passions, including traveling, bowling, coloring, listening to music, and RV trips. He especially loved motorcycle rides and completed three memorable round trips from California to Ohio on the back of his father's Harley trike—experiences he treasured greatly.

He is survived by his father, Allen Campbell; his cherished stepmother and friend, Ruth Leonnardt; his brothers, Chris Shaffer, Mike Shaffer, Russell Shaffer, Daniel Shaffer, and Scott Campbell; and his sisters, Lori Reno and Michelle Campbell. Matt also leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

God called Matt to heaven to be reunited with his beloved mother, Arlene, two hearts reunited. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bob Shaffer.

Matt's joyful personality and kind heart left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He spread happiness wherever he went and will be remembered for his smile, his laughter, and the love he shared so freely.
