Obituary

Myrna Papurt Weibel, DVM, of Huntsburg, was born May 28, 1934, and passed away at her home on July 16, 2022. She practiced veterinary medicine in the Chagrin Valley for decades and was married to the late Don A. Weibel, DVM.
Recognized by numerous animal welfare groups for her 30 plus years of dedication and volunteerism, including the Geauga Humane Society (GHS) as 2004 Volunteer of the Year and 2009 Humanitarian of the Year: "If we gathered all of the animals that Myrna has rescued, treated, spayed and neutered, adopted, vaccinated and examined, we could fill a stadium… Thanks to the dedicated and selfless veterinary services provided by Myrna Papurt DVM, many that might not have had a second chance went home to loving families. Foster parent to animals that many others wouldn't take, book author, Rescue Village Board columnist, past Board veterinarian, humane department veterinarian consultant and sole veterinarian surgeon for GHS's TNR program for feral cats, Dr. Papurt's service epitomizes her deep commitment for the welfare of animals and the incredible difference that one person can make in the lives of countless animals…her 'humane-ity' inspires us all."
Myrna was born in Cleveland and grew up in Shaker Heights before attending The Ohio State University where she earned her bachelor's degree. She taught grade school science and worked as a naturalist for the Cleveland Metroparks. When she graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1962, the class had just 4 percent female students.
Myrna is survived by her sister, Jane Papurt Yonas (Gerold) of Albuquerque, NM, children David G. Weibel (Betty) of Chagrin Falls, John Weibel of Washington DC and Amy Weibel Baker (David) of Phoenix, AZ, and grandchildren Claire Weibel of Chagrin Falls, Lorna and Riley Baker of Phoenix, nieces Jill Yonas Gibson (Jeff) of Amarillo, TX and their children Jenna, Jonathan and Libby; and Jodi Yonas Hidalgo (Mike) of Albuquerque, NM, and their children Emily and Benjamin. She is preceded in death by her husband Don A. Weibel, DVM, and twin sister, Myrel Papurt Fried (Howard).
At her request, there will be no services. Contributions can be made to your local animal shelter, and if possible, consider an adoption.
