Oral "Chub" Champlin, age 81, of Conneaut, OH., passed away Tuesday, November 14th, 2023, at Jefferson Healthcare with his wife and family by his side. Chub was born on April 20th, 1942, in Kelloggsville, Ohio, to parents Raymond and Ollie Champlin. He married the love of his life, Beatrice Gretta Cottrell on October 28th, 1961, and together they raised five children. He worked 18 years for the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company before retiring. Chub was a proud volunteer firefighter, founding member, and the first fire chief of the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department, which he helped start in 1973. He was also an accomplished builder having built various structures including a custom log cabin home he designed using logs he timbered himself. During the 1980's and early 1990's, Chub served as the President of the Ashtabula County Wagon Train, in which he was very active. Chub spent most of his life working with teams of mules; his final adventure with his last draft team of "Jim" and "Kate", was driving them and his covered wagon from Conneaut, OH., to Texarkana, TX, in 1999, which fulfilled his lifelong dream. Chub was an avid coon hunter, and gardener. He also loved to tinker with and repair many things. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Beatrice Champlin; his children, Duane Champlin, Pam Champlin, Hollie Champlin, Nancy (Greg) Hamper, and Debbie (Ken) Norris; and his beloved 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Chub is preceded in death by a cherished grandchild and great-grandchild. To honor Chub's request, there will be no funeral services or visitation. The family will be holding a private Celebration of Life. The Champlin family would like to thank all the caregivers who helped them through this difficult time.
