Obituary

Phillip Raymond Cheroka, 66, of Orwell, Ohio passed away at his home on December 29, 2023 after a valiant battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Phillip was born on May 12, 1957 in Warren, Ohio to the late John Cheroka and Mabel Carr Hurd. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister Linda Claypoole. He is survived by his longtime companion, Gloria Large, who he shared his home with and his beloved grandson, Joe. He leaves behind a large family which includes his sisters, Fayellen Ely, Vickie (Cole) Zobel, DeAnna Moore, Bonnie (Bill) Oller, Lavon (Charlie) O'Neill, Lora Burtt, Christine Little and Rose Stevens and a brother, Lynn Hurd Jr "JR," a daughter, Jamie Elder, many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He had many friends and acquaintances. He attended Pymatuning Valley School District and graduated in 1975 from Jefferson VOED where he learned carpentry. He loved working with wood and knew everything about building houses from top to bottom. He did a lot of carpentry, building, remodeling, fences, decks and wooden crafts. He also enjoyed some fishing, gardening, traveling and shopping at second hand stores for unique treasures. He loved riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle and would often take long scenic rides on beautiful days and be gone from dawn to dusk. Phil attended services at the North Jackson Church of the Nazarene and made good friends there including the Pastor Greg Mondok. They worked together on projects at the church and went on motorcycle rides together. Pastor Greg was very helpful to Phil in his times of need and was instrumental in leading his soul to heaven. He had moved to Oklahoma for a decade or so and was intrigued by his Native American Ancestry. He loved the silver and turquoise jewelry he bought there and adorned himself with it. He bought it for his mother also, as she shared his love for it. Family was important to him and he returned to the Orwell area where he helped to raise his grandson and cared lovingly for his mother until her death, and then took care of her grave. He loved children and they loved him. He helped many of his family members with building and remodeling projects and enjoyed doing so. He loved his cousins and visited with them often. He will be deeply missed by so many. The family would like to thank his medical team and Hospice nurses for their care and compassion. Cremation has taken place in the care of Lake Erie Cremation and Funeral Services. Please visit their website to leave condolences and memories for the family.
