Roger Lee Smith, 72, passed away in North Kingsville, Ohio, on May 30 2026. Roger passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Roger was born in Ashtabula, OH on October 10, 1953, to parents Thomas and Dorothy (Ford) Smith. He married Rose Marie Welker on December 2, 1972, at St. Joseph's Church in Ashtabula, Ohio.
He attended Ashtabula High School, Class of 1971. He graduated from Merc Cruise School in Ontario, Canada to become a Certified Merc Cruise Mechanic. He worked for over 38 years at Sutherland Marine in Ashabula Harbor. He was the only Merc Cruise Mechanic on the Ashtabula River. Roger was a Supervisor of the mechanics at the marina.
Roger loved old cars and passed this love along to his son, Israel Smith of Lodi, Ohio. Together they rebuilt a 1965 F100 Ford truck. He worked with his wife, Rose Smith, in Catholic Charities for Share Your Christmas for over 15 years.
He is survived by wife, Rose Smith; son, Israel A. Smith - wife Jill A. (Kemper) Smith; daughter, Shelly M. Sengun; grandchild, Simon U. Sengun. Roger is also survived by his siblings, Ginger Verdi, Steven Smith, Penny (Dale) Fako, Lori Stoneman-Brummett, Samantha Novak, Samandra (Andy) Nighswander, and Rosalee Lanham.
His parents Tom and Dorothy Smith, maternal grandparents Hilbert and Genevive Smith, paternal grandparents William R. Smith and Mayagness Smith and brother in laws Ron Verdi, Angel Colon and sister in law Patti Smith preceded him in death.
A private family memorial will be held on June 17, 2026 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at St. Peter's Episcopalian Church, 4901 Main Avenue, Ashtabula Ohio 44004.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family can be mailed to the Church at 4901 Main Avenue, Ashtabula Ohio 44004.
Lake Erie Cremation & Funeral Services, 1500 Harpersfield Rd, Geneva, OH 44041, assisted the family with arrangements.
