Obituary

Shirley E. Courtney, 91, of Trumbull Township, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at Ashtabula County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Shirley was born on May 14, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, to William and Lydia Robinson. She spent her early years in Cleveland, where she attended school, and married Kenneth Courtney on June 6, 1964, in Cleveland, OH.

Well known in Geneva, Shirley worked for many years at McDonald's and Applewood, where she was remembered fondly as a waitress, short-order cook, and familiar friendly face. She also served as a 4-H advisor for several years and was an active member of the Trumbull Hosettes. Shirley generously gave her time helping with the NEO Soap Box Derby and was always willing to lend a hand where needed.
A very creative person, Shirley loved gardening and growing vegetables. She enjoyed garage sales, crossword puzzles and word searches, playing cards—especially 500 rummy—and visiting casinos. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family especially her grandchildren. She often visited her brothers in Cleveland and Columbiana. She also dearly loved her dog, Duke, who brought her great comfort and companionship.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Courtney; her parents, William and Lydia Robinson; and her son, Andrew Courtney; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Tom (Leota) Robinson, Jack(Dorraine)Robinson, Louie Robinson, Eddie (Clara) Robinson, and Bill Robinson; nephew, Eddie Robinson; Clover Courtney mother-in-law, Albert Courtney,father-in-law, Pinky Clementi sister-in-law and Phillip Maher brother-in-law.

She is survived by her daughter, Kris (Doug) Johnston; her grandchildren Jim (Tina) Batanian and Krista Monferdini; step-grandchildren, Stephen Johnston and Candice Johnston; and great-grandchildren, James Batanian Jr. and Courtney Batanian. She is also survived by her siblings Lydia Maher and Ted (Donna) Robinson and sister-in-law MaryLou Robinson, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Ashtabula County Nursing Home staff, Hospice of the Western Reserve, and Counting Blessings Home Care for their compassionate care and support.
