In Loving Memory of Steven Dale Mitchell

October 7, 1955 – July 10, 2025

Steven Dale Mitchell of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 69. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of the late Robert and Pauline Mitchell.

A proud graduate of South High School and Florida A&M University, Steven devoted over 35 years to education as a special education teacher in East Cleveland. He was recognized as an Educator of Excellence by The Plain Dealer and received the Unsung Hero Award. A lifelong advocate for literacy, he was a published author whose work highlighted the challenges struggling readers face, something he remained deeply passionate about throughout his life.

Steven was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., The National Education Association, Ohio Education Association and The Tuxedo Club. He loved fishing, football, golf, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Clothilda Kempt; his children, Quinton (Laura), Devyn (Reginald), and Joy; and grandchildren Naomi, Aaron, Adriana, Sergio, and Brynn. He is also remembered by his siblings Robert III, Paulette, Thresea, Antoinette, and Althea, and shared a lifelong bond with his dearest cousin, Vernett "Beanie."

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert III, and grandparents.
A Celebration of Life will be held October at a day and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the forthcoming Steven D. Mitchell Reading Foundation, honoring his lifelong commitment to student success.

Steven's legacy of love, learning, and leadership lives on in all who knew him.

Lake Erie Cremation and Funeral Services, 29801 Lakeland Blvd, Wickliffe, Ohio assisted the family with arrangements.
